Armillaria ostoyae, also known as the “honey fungus,” holds the title for being the largest organism in the world. It covers approximately 2,385 acres (9.6 square kilometers) of soil in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest. This colossal fungus is estimated to be around 2,400 years old, although some estimates suggest it could be much older, possibly over 8,000 years! It grows underground and consists of a vast network of mycelium, the underground part of a fungus that absorbs nutrients from the soil. Despite its massive size, much of its structure remains hidden from view, making it a remarkable and mysterious wonder of the natural world.
